Preschool Intervention and Referral Team

Referral Process
A request to the Preschool Intervention and Referral Team (PIRT) can be made by a parent or teacher who has a concern regarding a child’ s health, language, behavior or learning process. PIRT services can also be requested if the child’s score on the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R) falls into the “Refer” category (see ESI-R description below). Children whose scores are within the “Re-screen” range on this screening and who remain in that range after re-screening may also benefit from a referral to the Preschool Intervention and Referral Team. The ESI-R is administered in the Fall or upon entry into the preschool program.

The Early Screening Inventory – Revised (ESI-R)
The ESI-R is a brief developmental screening instrument that is administered to children from 3 to 6 years of age. It is designed to give schools and parents important information about a child’s development in language, motor skills and cognition. The ESI-R is NOT used to determine if a child needs to be classified for special education.
