Board of Education Members Facilitated School/Community Relations Council

Consistent with Goal 5: Community & Family Engagement of the  2008 – 2012 District Strategic Plan, Board Members Renata A. Hernandez and Keisha Edwards facilitated the first meeting of the School/Community Relations Committee.  This meeting was designed to develop a need assessment on the strengths and weaknesses of the district/community connect and develop innovative strategies to address them.  Interim Superintendent Anna Belin-Pyles attended and participated in the discussion.  Ongoing meetings have been scheduled.


Office of Bilingual Education Sponsors Dual Language Training

Consistent with Goal 1: Learning Outcomes of the 2008-2012 District Strategic Plan, the
Office of Bilingual Education sponsored a three-day training in the Dual Language-One Way Model.  The teachers learned the philosophy, methodology, and successful strategies in teaching and learning to implement a Dual Language-One Way Model in their classrooms.  The Dual Language Model is recognized throughout the nation, and is additive in that students not only master English but also maintain their first language as well.  This has been proven to enhance academic achievement.


Planning Meeting for Joe Black Field Dedication

Consistent with Goal 5: Community & Family Engagement of the 2008-2012 District Strategic Plan, a planning meeting to prepare for the Joe Black Field Dedication was held on Wednesday, August 25, 2010.  This meeting was attended by several school board members, Interim Superintendent Belin-Pyles, members of the Joe Black family, elected city officials, and selected community members.  This meeting was extremely successful and plans are underway for a memorable event.


PHS to Host Band Camp Exhibition
Consistent with Goal 5: Community & Family Engagement of the 2008-2012 District Strategic Plan, the Plainfield High School Department of Bands is proud to present the 2010-2011 edition of the Plainfield High Marching Band. The band will host its third annual band camp exhibition highlighting the achievements of the students over the course of the two week band camp. The Plainfield community is invited to witness the "Beast of the Northeast" perform their first field show in anticipation of the 2010 Football season. The show will begin at 12:00 PM in the Plainfield High School Gym on Saturday 28, 2010.

Learnia Assessment System
On Thursday, August 26, 2010, Acting Assistant Superintendent Caryn D. Cooper and members of the Educational Services team met with a Pearson Learnia Consultant.  The New Jersey Edition of Learnia, is a classroom assessment system designed to support the work of New Jersey’s educators and their students’ learning.  The Learnia formative assessment system empowers educators with periodic information throughout the school year on the progress of students toward acquiring the skills and knowledge that will be assessed on the NJ ASK.  This program will replace the Acuity program that was used previously at a savings of over $50,000.00.

High Schools that Work
On Friday, August 27, 2010, Acting Assistant Superintendent Caryn D. Cooper and administrators from the high school and Educational Services met with a consultant from High Schools That Work to plan professional development for staff and administrative support.

PHS Facilities Freshman Orientation
Consistent with Goal 1: Learning Outcomes of the 2008-2012 District Strategic Plan, the Plainfield High School sponsored a student and parent orientation on Wednesday, August 25, 2010. 

Phoenix Curriculum Meeting
Consistent with Goal 4: Safe Learning Environment of the 2008-2012 District Strategic Plan, Interim Superintendent Anna Belin-Pyles, Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs, and selected city and district personnel met with representative from the NJ Department of Law & Public Safety, Juvenile Justice Commission.  The purpose of this meeting was to explore the possibilities of adopting a supplemental curriculum which aids in reducing school violence.  The attendees included: Mr. Allen Mitchell, Ms. Michelle Russomanno, Mr. Felix Mickens, and Mr. Robert Mercado.

Hydroponic in Schools
On Thursday, August 26, 2010, School Board Vice President Rasheed Abdul-Haqq, Interim Superintendent Anna Belin-Pyles, and Acting Assistant Superintendent Caryn D. Cooper visited Garden State Urban Farms in Orange, New Jersey.  The purpose of this visit was to explore the possibilities of hydroponics in schools and investigating resources to implement in one of the district’s learning facilities.

Medical Assistant Program
Consistent with Goal 1: Learning Outcomes of the 2008 – 2012 District Strategic Plan, Interim Superintendent Anna Belin-Pyles and Mr. Jeff Dunn, President of the Plainfield Chamber of Commerce, held a conference call with a Philadelphia-based organization regarding the possibilities of an ally health program.  This initiative would allow our secondary students to receive college credits and explore health-related fields such as nursing assistant and lavatory technician.

Recognition Program for PLP Members
Consistent with Goal 2: Human Resources of the 2008 – 2012 District Strategic Plan, the Plainfield Public Schools will host a recognition program for the members of the Plainfield Leadership Program on Wednesday, September 25, 2010 at Emerson Community School.  More information will be provided at a later date.
