Plainfield Public Schools Board of Education Approves Preliminary 2026–2027 Budget Focused on Student Supports and Strategic Alignment

Plainfield, NJ – March 25, 2026 – The Plainfield Public Schools Board of Education has approved the district’s preliminary budget for the 2026–2027 school year, advancing a financial plan that prioritizes student achievement, protects essential supports, and ensures responsible alignment of resources across the district.

The proposed budget reflects a strategic approach to navigating fiscal challenges while continuing to invest in programs and services that directly impact student success. Key priorities include preserving academic intervention services, sustaining afterschool and enrichment programs, and strengthening classroom and instructional supports across all schools.

A central component of this year’s budget development process is the district’s focus on right-sizing its staffing and resources in response to shifting enrollment trends. Like many districts across the state and nation, Plainfield Public Schools is experiencing a gradual decline in student enrollment, influenced in part by broader societal factors, including changes in birth rates, housing patterns, and the continued expansion of school choice options.

In response, the district has taken a thoughtful and data-driven approach to ensure that staffing levels are aligned with current student enrollment. This includes making sure that every teacher has a full and appropriate roster, reducing inefficiencies, and ensuring that resources are distributed equitably across schools and grade levels. These efforts are designed not as reductions in quality, but as a strategic realignment to maintain strong classroom experiences while operating within fiscal realities.

“This preliminary budget reflects our commitment to fiscal responsibility while ensuring that our students continue to receive the resources and opportunities they need to succeed,” said Cameron E. Cox, School Business Administrator/Board Secretary. “Right-sizing is about being good stewards of our resources. We are aligning staffing and supports with enrollment in a way that maintains program quality and positions the district for long-term sustainability.”

The budget also reinforces a district-wide literacy initiative spanning grades K–12, with targeted efforts in early literacy, intermediate reading and writing development, and secondary-level critical thinking and analysis. These efforts are aligned with the district’s commitment to improving outcomes for all students through a coherent and system-wide approach.

Despite financial pressures such as rising charter school tuition costs, increasing health insurance expenses, and broader economic factors, the district has worked diligently to develop a responsible and balanced spending plan. While the district has received an increase in state aid, a significant portion of those funds is offset by mandated increases in charter school payments.

Acting Superintendent Elizabeth Filippatos, Ed. D., emphasized the importance of aligning resources while keeping students at the center of every decision.

“Our focus remains clear, protecting the classroom experience and ensuring that every student has access to high-quality instruction and meaningful supports,” said Dr. Filippatos. “Right-sizing allows us to be intentional and strategic, ensuring that every classroom is staffed appropriately, and every student continues to receive the attention and support they deserve.”

The preliminary budget now moves forward for submission to the Union County Department of Education and will continue through the approval process, with additional opportunities for community engagement and input. The next Budget Hearing will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., to be held at the Charles and Anna Booker Elementary School, located at 730 Central Street, Plainfield, NJ 07062.

Plainfield Public Schools remains committed to responsible stewardship of resources while advancing its mission to provide a high-quality, equitable education for all students.
