Plainfield Board of Education Highlights Progress, Community Voice, and Strategic Vision at April Business Meeting
PLAINFIELD, NJ – April 15, 2026 – The Plainfield Public Schools Board of Education held its regularly scheduled business meeting on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Charles & Anna Booker Elementary School. All agenda items were approved, advancing key priorities related to student success, fiscal responsibility, and long-term district stability.
The meeting opened with recognitions celebrating student excellence, including an “Unsung Hero” honor for a student from Plainfield Academy for the Arts and Advanced Studies highlighting their continued success in competitive programming.
Acting Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Filippatos presented an update on district operations, including student safety, enrollment trends, and staffing considerations. A central focus of the meeting was student enrollment. As of March 2026, total district enrollment stands at 8,182 students. This reflects a decrease from 8,186 students in February 2026 and continues a broader downward trend over time. District data shows that the student movement is being driven in large part by transfers out of the district, including families relocating to other states or leaving the country, along with transfers to other public-school districts. These patterns are critical factors shaping district planning, staffing, and resource allocation.
In response to these enrollment shifts, the Board approved a Resolution to implement a Reduction in Force and rightsizing plan in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:28-9. The decision follows a comprehensive review of district needs, funding, and staffing structures. Rightsizing is a process used to ensure that staffing levels align with current student enrollment and program needs.
The district emphasized that this process was conducted with a deliberate and structured approach. Initial steps included eliminating vacancies, analyzing enrollment trends and program redundancies, and reassigning staff where possible based on certification and seniority. Only after these steps were exhausted did the district move forward with staff reductions.
The approved Reduction in Force will take effect at the end of the day on June 30, 2026. Decisions regarding impacted staff were guided by state law, contractual obligations, and seniority requirements. The district also conducted a full review to determine opportunities for reassignment, transfer, or reemployment where applicable, this review will continue throughout the year.
District leadership underscored that any reduction if force decisions are not performance-based, but instead driven by enrollment declines, budget realities, and organizational needs. The process was carried out with a focus on fairness, transparency, and respect for all employees affected. Despite these changes, the district affirmed that continuity of services will be maintained, with critical roles filled by appropriately qualified personnel to ensure no disruption to student learning or support services.
The Board also approved a range of personnel actions, including contractual and administrative appointments, resignations, retirements, and leaves of absence. Notably, the Board recognized the retirement of several long-serving staff members and extended appreciation for their years of dedicated service to the district.
The district’s board attorney, Khalifah L. Shabazz, issued a statement regarding the former Plainfield Public School District employee who was arrested in connection with receiving improper payments from the district.
“Upon becoming aware of the matter, the district immediately referred it to law enforcement authorities. The case was subsequently investigated by the police, which limited the district’s ability to conduct an internal review. All appropriate protocols were followed to ensure the matter was referred to the Prosecutor’s Office. The district continues to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.”
Further approvals included stipends for extracurricular programming such as intramural activities and athletics, including the addition of esports coaching positions preparing for the district’s second-annual eSports tournament on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
