PLAINFIELD, NJ – December 19, 2023 – The Union County Conference has named Plainfield High School's head football coach, James Williams, Union County Football Coach of the Year for the 2023 season. This announcement comes after Coach Williams led the Plainfield Cardinals to a 6-5 record, making the playoffs for the first time since 2010.
"It is an honor to be named Union County Coach of the Year," said James Williams, head coach of the Plainfield High School Cardinals. He continued, "This award embodies hard work, dedication, and integrity. Elements each of us bring with us on and off the field. My responsibility as the head coach is to drive the
players to another level, so my focus is to continue to work with the members of the program and the players on a system to accomplish this and beyond." He added, "I am excited to see how we grow from this past season and looking forward to the future of our football program."
Previously, Coach Williams head coached for the Roselle High School Rams, where he won two conference titles and took the Rams to two sectional semifinals, including a 2016 campaign where his team was the top-scoring team in the state.
Coach Williams joined the Plainfield High School Football Program in 2020. Since his debut year, he has worked diligently as the head coach to pull the Cardinals out of a decade of defeat, giving them a new taste of victory. In the season's opener, the Plainfield Cardinals defeated Elizabeth High School, awarding Williams, his 50th career victory as a head coach.
"Coach Williams’ unwavering dedication to excellence and leadership on and off the field have not only brought pride to our school but have also inspired our entire community. His commitment to fostering a winning spirit, sportsmanship, and character development is truly commendable. This achievement is a testament to your passion and hard work,” stated Rashon K. Hasan, Ed. S., Superintendent of Schools.

Williams was named Union County Coach of the Year out of 17 high school football coaches in the county.
