PLAINFIELD, NJ – February 23, 2024 – The Plainfield Boys' and Girls' Varsity Basketball teams have advanced to the New Jersey State Playoffs.
“We are incredibly proud of our players' dedication, passion, and hard work. Their drive has brought them this far and will continue to propel them to the end,” said Superintendent Rashon K. Hasan, Ed. S.
The Girls Varsity Basketball team holds a remarkable record of 19-6, and they have already won the Mountain Division Championship. They are the top seeded team in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Group 4, Section 2 Tournament, a rank which they have not held since the early 1980s. In the first round, the Lady Cardinals defeated Union Farmers with a score of 73-40.
After the impressive performance of the Lady Cardinals, the Boys’ Varsity team has also been doing well this season with a record of 17-7. The team was seeded at number eight in the NJSIAA Group 4, Section 2 Tournament and they managed to secure a victory against the Woodbridge Barrons with a score of 55-44.
“It is a very exciting time for Plainfield Basketball. Having success from both our boys and girls’ programs are a testament to the hard work of all of our student athletes, coaches, and program contributors. The best part of this, is that both teams are young; and we expect them to only get better over the next couple years,” said Corey Tucker, Assistant Athletic Director.
On Monday, February 26, both teams will advance to the quarterfinals to face Phillipsburg High School. The Lady Cardinals will host the match in Plainfield while the Cardinals will visit Phillipsburg.
For the first time in over a decade, Plainfield hosted state tournament games.
