PLAINFIELD, NJ – September 24, 2024 – Plainfield Public Schools celebrated the highly anticipated unveiling of its new track and turf field at Hub Stine Sports Complex on Friday, September 20. The event drew over 100 community members, students, and staff, who gathered to witness district leaders and the Plainfield Board of Education, including Board President Hanae M. Wyatt, Board Vice President Victor L. Webb, Jr., and Board members Terence J. Johnson, Sincere Malone, ShonTé Smith, and Sarah B. Virgo cut the ribbon on a 78,000-square-foot state-of-the-art turf field—marking the first major renovation since its inception.
“This new turf field is more than just a playing surface—it is a symbol of progress and an investment in our future,” said Superintendent of Schools Rashon K. Hasan, Ed. S. “It will be the home for various athletic programs, including football, soccer, track, and field events. With the latest technology in turf design, this field ensures a safer, more durable, and environmentally sustainable environment for our athletes. Additionally, this project includes resurfacing the track, which features striking blue lanes representing our district colors.”
Phase II of the renovation project includes the installation of the new artificial turf field and track, alongside improvements that provide Wi-Fi access for district events. This groundbreaking ceremony completes the second phase, following the successful opening of Phase One, which included two newly renovated field houses equipped with modern athletic lockers, upgraded toilet and shower facilities, a trainer’s room, a coach’s office, and storage and laundry areas.
Cameron E. Cox, Chief of Business Operations and Board Secretary, reflected on the significance of the moment, “Do we mention the individual advancements of the project? The total project cost, which did not impose any increase on local property taxpayers? Regardless, I want to thank all those who dared to dream, worked diligently, and supported the past, present, and future students of Plainfield Public Schools.”
The new updates will transform the facility into a first-rate venue, equipped with enhanced amenities that demonstrate Plainfield Public Schools' dedication to supporting the holistic development of its students, both academically and athletically.
“These projects are more than physical upgrades—they are investments in the future of Plainfield Public Schools. They reflect our unwavering commitment to providing our students with the resources they need to succeed, whether on the field, in the classroom, or in life,” Superintendent Hasan stated.
Assistant Athletic Director Corey Tucker shared his personal connection to the field, saying, “It is a huge honor, privilege, and pleasure to be here today. As a kid, I watched historic games on this field, played on it myself, and now I have the opportunity to help create more historic moments in my administrative role.”
Plainfield Cardinals quarterback Ala-meen Watkins expressed gratitude on behalf of the team stating, “We would like to express our deepest gratitude for your generous contributions towards the construction of our new football field. Your generosity extends beyond the players and coaches, benefiting families, fans, and the entire community who will gather here to support our games and events. We are incredibly fortunate to have supporters who believe in the positive influence of sports and community involvement.”
Superintendent Hasan concluded, “I look forward to seeing the incredible feats our student-athletes will achieve on this field and the lasting impact these improvements will have for years to come.”
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Plainfield Cardinals hosted their home opener on the new field, defeating the Perth Amboy Panthers 41-0.
Plainfield Cardinals will play against the Somerville Pioneers on Saturday, October 18, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.
