PLAINFIELD, NJ – December 10, 2024 – On Saturday, December 7, 2024, the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) held its semiannual Delegate Assembly at the Conference Center at Mercer in West Windsor. Plainfield Public Schools made a significant impact at the event, with three out of four resolutions submitted by the district successfully passing.

Board President Hanae M. Wyatt, Vice President Victor L. Webb, Jr., and Board Commissioners Terence J. Johnson and Sarah Virgo participated in the Assembly. The Delegate Assembly is NJSBA’s major policy-setting body, allowing local school boards to propose and vote on resolutions that guide the Association’s policies and bylaws.

The resolutions presented by the Plainfield Board of Education included Pilots 97/3, Generational Wealth 84/19, and Reparations 57/43, all of which passed. However, the Renaming Schools resolution did not pass, with a 13/87 vote.

Superintendent Hasan praised the success of the resolutions, "The passing of these three resolutions is a major milestone in our ongoing commitment to improving educational opportunities for all students. We are focused on implementing policies that drive systemic change in education and ensure equity across New Jersey. The Plainfield Board of Education is proud to be a voice in this important work."

The resolutions submitted by local school boards are reviewed by NJSBA’s general counsel and the Resolutions Subcommittee before being presented at the Delegate Assembly. Commissioner Sarah Virgo, who serves on the Policy and Legislative Committee for Plainfield Public Schools, presented the resolutions at the Assembly.

“I am filled with immense pride for the opportunity to have represented the Plainfield Board of Education as NJSBA Delegate. The passing of these three pivotal resolutions marks a significant milestone in our journey toward equitable education,” said Commissioner Virgo. “By advocating for generational wealth in our financial literacy curriculum, investing in reparative education for marginalized communities, and ensuring our voices are heard in pilot negotiation committees, we are laying the groundwork for a more just and inclusive future. This is important work that sets a precedent for meaningful change, and it has been an honor to be a part of this transformative journey.”

Plainfield’s involvement in the Delegate Assembly and the passing of these resolutions demonstrate the district’s unwavering commitment to driving policy changes that directly benefit students. The resolutions are a part of the ongoing work to advocate for systemic improvements and equitable access to educational resources.

Board President Hanae M. Wyatt acknowledged the collective efforts of the board, “As President of the Plainfield Board of Education, I extend my sincere gratitude to Commissioner Sarah Virgo for her dedication to policy development and her contributions to the NJSBA Delegate Assembly. Over the past three years, our collective efforts have demonstrated our commitment to advancing student success statewide. While I did not support one resolution for reasons tied to its broader implications, I respect differing perspectives and remain focused on advocating for Plainfield and fostering progress through impactful, collaborative solutions.”

Vice President Victor L. Webb, Jr. also celebrated the success of the resolutions, “As Chair of the Policy Committee, I am happy to have attended the Delegate Assembly and proud to see three of the four resolutions presented by Commissioner Virgo supported and approved. This accomplishment highlights our board’s dedication to advocating for policies that drive meaningful change. I am excited to continue the work we have started as a board and remain committed to presenting resolutions that align with our shared goal of ensuring the best outcomes for our students overall.”

Commissioner Terence J. Johnson expressed his support, “I am committed to working with our board to advocate for resolutions that prioritize our students’ success. I am proud of what we have accomplished and was honored to attend the Delegate Assembly to support Commissioner Sarah Virgo as she presented our resolutions. Her efforts reflect our shared dedication to making a meaningful impact on education.”

As Plainfield Public Schools continues to advocate for educational reforms, the passing of these resolutions signals a broader commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and the well-being of all students in New Jersey.
